A SURFER was killed by a shark while his bride watched in terror from the beach.
The 36-year-old man was using a hired body board when the predator struck at him twice.
Another swimmer, who saw the sea turn red with blood, scrambled out of the water to alert emergency services.
The unnamed man, who was on honeymoon with his new wife, was rescued from the sea but had lost so much blood that he died on the beach.
His wife, who had been sunbathing on the beach, went into shock following the tragedy at Saint-Gilles in Reunion Island.
A spokesman for the island’s tourist office said: “She’s being treated for severe shock. The surfer suffered bites to the right arm and hand, and the right thigh.
The beach was closed while officials searched for the shark. It is now thought to have been reopened for bathing.
Relatives of the couple back home in Morteau, close to the French/Swiss border, have been informed of the tragedy. Many were at the couple’s wedding a few days ago.
Three people have been killed by sharks in Reunion over the past two years.
