he Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its civil society
allies have announced plans to hold nationwide rallies to force
government to bring all those culpable in the mismanagement of pension
funds.
Acting President of the NLC, Promise Adewusi, who revealed this in
Abuja said the action which is slated for next week Wednesday, April 10,
was informed by government apathy on bringing those that have been
indicted in the mismanagement of pension funds in recent time.
“For the purposes of clarity and removing all doubts, all our members
are expected to stay off work in Abuja and Lagos on April 10 and mass
to designated areas which they have already been informed of.
“All workers, all members of organised labour in those two cities,
Abuja and Lagos, are to stay off work in solidarity and in support.
“And mass in this rally at least to show our disappointment at the
whole issue of pension mismanagement and the underlining corruptive
tendencies surrounding it.’’
Adewusi, who lauded the efforts of both the House of Representatives
and Senate, lamented the huge scams unearthed by the legislators and
laudable steps taken have not been complimented by the federal
government, which has done little to stop the rot in the management of
pension funds in the country.
Adewusi said the only thing that could shelve the protest was a show
of willingness on the part of the Federal Government to address the
“gross criminalities and inequities in the pension fund administration
in the country’’.
He added that as labour bodies that are responsible and responsive to
the plights of its affiliates such the National Union of Pensioners
(NUP), both the NLC and its Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart can
no longer sit by and watch those who invested their youths in the
service of their nation die as a result of inconsistencies in the
payment of their pension allowances.
He explained that workers in Lagos and Abuja are therefore expected
to stay away from work on Wednesday, 10th April and instead congregate
at designated areas for the protest march.
He added that the protests will be organized simultaneously across all the states of the federation.
